زكاة المال في الإمارات: ما تحتاج إلى معرفته

What is zakat and who must pay it?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam: an annual payment of 2.5% of qualifying wealth, due from every adult Muslim whose zakatable wealth has remained at or above the nisab for one full lunar year. It purifies wealth and is distributed to the categories of recipients set out in the Quran (9:60), such as the poor and those in need.

What is the nisab - and should I use the gold or the silver standard?

The nisab is the minimum amount of wealth at which zakat becomes due. It is defined as the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Because silver is worth much less than gold, the silver nisab is far lower - around AED 2,500 at this calculator's default price, versus around AED 35,000 for gold - so more people qualify to pay. Many scholars consider the silver standard the more prudent choice for cash and mixed wealth, which is why it is the default here; the gold standard is sometimes used when someone's wealth consists only of gold. Both are selectable in the calculator, and the prices per gram are editable so you can use today's rates.

What is the hawl (lunar year)?

The hawl is one complete lunar (Hijri) year - about 354 days. Zakat becomes due once your wealth has remained at or above the nisab for a full hawl, and it is calculated on what you own on the day the hawl completes - so enter your balances as of your zakat date. If your wealth dips below the nisab during the year, the schools of law treat it differently; if that applies to you, ask a scholar.

What counts as zakatable wealth - and what does not?

Zakatable: cash and bank balances, gold and silver, shares and funds, money you are owed and realistically expect to receive, and goods bought for resale. Not zakatable: the house you live in, your personal car, furniture, clothing and other personal-use items. Gold and silver jewellery in regular personal use is a point of genuine scholarly difference: the Hanafi school includes it, while most other schools exempt it. Many people in the Gulf include it as the safer option - if the amount is significant for you, ask a scholar.

Which debts can I deduct?

Debts due now or in the short term - bills, credit card balances, instalments currently payable - are deducted from your zakatable wealth. For long-term commitments such as a mortgage or car loan, many scholars allow deducting only the instalments due in the near term, not the entire outstanding balance. Opinions differ, so check with a scholar if the deduction changes whether you reach the nisab.

When should I pay zakat?

Zakat is due whenever your own hawl completes - there is no fixed date in the calendar. Many Muslims choose to pay during Ramadan, both for the greater reward of giving in that month and because it makes the annual date easy to track. If you do, use Ramadan to Ramadan as your hawl and value your wealth on that date each year.

How is zakat calculated on investments and rental property?

Shares, ETFs and funds are most commonly zakated at their full market value each year - the simplest and most widely followed approach, and the one this calculator assumes. Some scholars allow long-term investors to pay only on the zakatable assets underlying the companies they own; that requires a more detailed calculation. A property you rent out is itself not zakatable, but the rental income you have saved by your zakat date is - include it under cash. Property bought to resell is trading stock and is zakatable at market value.

How does this calculator work?

It adds up your cash, gold and silver (grams multiplied by the editable price per gram), investments and money owed to you, subtracts debts due now, compares the total with the nisab standard you selected, and shows 2.5% of the total if you are at or above the nisab. The default prices per gram are estimates, not live market rates - check today's prices for an exact figure.

Is this religious or financial advice?

No. This calculator is an educational tool to help you estimate your zakat. Rulings differ between schools of law and individual circumstances, so for an exact amount - or to pay your zakat through an official channel in the UAE - consult a qualified scholar or an official body such as the UAE Zakat Fund.
